Frenectomies
and Tissue Recontouring
Sometimes tissues do
not behave the way we want them. With the mouth we can have muscle
attachments that do not reshape properly when the teeth come in
resulting in high/heavy frenum pulls. These can cause teeth to
shift into crooked positions as well as cause the gum tissue to
pull away from the teeth exposing the root surface. In other cases
gum tissue can overgrow and make areas difficult to clean and
difficult to fix. Soft tissue growths, like fibrous masses from
repeated cheek biting, can also be removed with the
laser.
Case #2
- Frenectomy
This
patient had a very strong frenum pull on the bottom right. This was
causing increased recession of the gum tissue around the adjacent
teeth. Over the long term this can result in bone loss, decay of
the exposed root surface, and tooth movement. To help prevent
future damage, the ezlase was used to sever the muscle attachment
and reshape the tissue.
Case #1 - Hypertrophic
Tissue Removal
This patient had
overgrown gum tissue along the inside surfaces of her bottom front
teeth. This tissue made the area very difficult to clean which kept
the tissue irritated and continuing to grow. In some cases this can
be caused by things like medications and repetitive trauma and if
the cause is not dealt with, the tissue will likely grow back. For
this case, once the tissue was removed, the area healed quickly and
improved its self cleansing ability.
